I’m putting a PDF guide on my website, but I want visitors to read it as a proper HTML page rather than download it. How can I preserve the layout and links cleanly?
The simplest thing to check first is exporting it to HTML directly through Acrobat or Word. Honestly though, PDF to HTML usually creates pretty messy code, so you will probly have to clean up the styling manually if you want it responsive.
The annoying part is that PDF is fixed-layout, so a clean, responsive HTML version cannot always preserve it exactly. If you have the original Word, InDesign, or similar file, export that directly to HTML; otherwise try Adobe Acrobat’s Export to HTML or pdftohtml, then inspect the result and verify links manually. For complex guides, I would keep the PDF as a download and create a simplified HTML version for reading.
Tried this with some expense PDFs last year and learned the hard way that free converters mess up the links. Opening in Acrobat and exporting as HTML kept the layout better for me tbh. What device are you working on?
Yeah, this one’s annoying because PDFs just aren’t built to reflow like web pages. First thing I’d try is saving a copy, then opening the PDF in a word processor like Google Docs or Word to export as HTML, that usually keeps links intact even if formatting shifts a bit. Complex layouts with columns or tables rarely survive the jump, so expect to clean up the CSS manually after.
