I am setting up a client onboarding form in PDF format on my Mac, and I need them to be able to type their contact details directly into specific areas. How can I insert fillable text boxes into the file so they stay editable after I save and send it?

Honestly, Mac Preview won’t let you create actual fillable fields, just fill them. I usually open the file in Adobe Acrobat or use a free tool like Sejda to drop form fields in before emailing them to clietns.

tbh Preview on Mac lets me add text boxes for my own notes but they don’t stay fillable when I send the PDF. I learned the hard way and switched to Acrobat’s form tools for permission slips. Does that match what you have or are you trying a free option?

When I had to make our client forms on my Mac, I got stuck on this too. Apple Preview lets you fill out forms, but not create them. I ended up using LibreOffice to draw the text boxes and exported it as a PDF so clients could type right into it.

On a Mac you can actually do this with Preview sometimes, but honestly it depends on whether your PDF already has form fields. If it does not, I would use the markup toolbar’s text box tool as a workaround, though that is not a true fillable field, just floating text. For real fillable forms I always keep a backup of the original and build the fields in Acrobat, since Preview does not create proper interactive fields.
