I need to extract the plain text out of a 20-page PDF report for class, but copy-pasting just gives me weird broken symbols. How can I convert it cleanly without having to retype everything?

Honestly, the simplest thing is uploading it to Google Drive and opening it in Google Docs. It runs OCR automatically and usally fixes those broken encoding issues. Works almost every time for messy contracts I get.

@clumsy_goblin yeah the google docs thing saved me too, insurance forms used to come out as total gibberish when i pasted them. layout shifts a bit but the text comes out clean, i paste it into word after and fix the spacing.

I had that exact issue with broken symbols on a payroll report once. What worked for me was opening the PDF directly in Microsoft Word. Word converts it into regular text pretty cleanly, so you can just copy what you need.

Yeah that garbled text usually means the PDF has a weird font encoding or it’s actually a scan with an image layer. First make a copy of the original so you don’t mess it up. Try opening it in Word (it can import PDFs and reflow text decently) or Google Docs, upload the PDF there and it’ll convert it. If it’s scanned pages, plain copy paste won’t ever work right since there’s no real text to grab.
